Rosemary Sadlier

A little about her:

Rosemary Sadlier was born in Toronto and has been a vigorous supporter of Black initiatives. Ontario Black History Society (OBHS) is the first provincial heritage organization in Canada that is focused on African-Canadian history. With Rosemary Sadlier being a volunteer President starting 1993, Black History Month became effective in 1996 and it is now a national celebration. In recognition, she was presented with the Black Links Award for her efforts.

With her heavy work load in OBHS, she managed to be an author also and had published many books. For example, The Kid’s Book of Black Canadian History was one of her masterpieces which were published in 2003. This book covers the early civilizations in Africa, the story of the Underground Railroad that caused African Americans to come into Canada, achievements of Black inventors, politicians, writers, artists, scientists and much more stories. It is a comprehensive story and will enrich everyone’s knowledge of Black Canadians. She also took part in the film area, such as the Seeking Salvation: A History of the Black Church in Canada, or A Scattering of Seeds: the Mary Ann Shadd story. On top of that, she has presented in many places about Black history, raising the awareness of social equity. She was a recipient of the William Peyton Hubbard Race Relations Award, the Woman for PACE Award, and the Planet Africa Marcus Garvey Award. The countless awards she has received are recognitions of her tireless work in promoting the Black history and culture.

Poster Ideas:

It was hard to find pictures of “unknown” African Canadians so for this project I am stuck with one picture. Sadlier has her hands together under her chin, so I think I would put the word “Unity” on the poster. It would be a simple, but straight forward message to the audience. This word also fits Salier’s principle too, as she often advocate for the Black society. Maybe I will put a line or two of some Black history information. I will use the “propaganda colours” (colours that standout but they look dim) and try to make it look like old style propagandas.

  1. Hello Slowjo,

I just happened to come across this blog that you created and I was pleased with how you chose to interpret my pose. Just by chance, the image was captured by my daughter, so it gives even more salience to the idea of 'unity' being expressed.
I am sure that you have since moved onto other subjects, but thanks so much for deciding on me at this point in your life - I am sure you will go on to do many wonderful projects!
